LEBANON 2017

Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible. William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

WHY OPEN DOORS?

Open Doors is an international ministry serving persecuted Christians and churches worldwide. We supply Bibles, leadership training, literacy programmes, livelihood support and advocacy services. We also seek to mobilise the church in the UK & Ireland to serve Christians living under religious persecution.

The story behind the Lebanon Muskathlon
It is happening right now. For the first time in two thousand years Christians in Iraq and Syria are at the brink of extermination. In the areas controlled by Islamic State and different terrorist factions, Christians have to fear for their lives. Hundreds of thousands of Christians have fled their homes, and often their countries. During their forced flight they could take none of their belongings, except for the clothes they were wearing. Their traumatic experiences are forever etched on their memories. In Lebanon itself more than one and a half million refugees have taken shelter. They feel unwanted and deserted. During the Muskathlon we will step into their misery, to offer help, to encourage and to support the Lebanese church.

The journey
During your Muskathlon you will meet persecuted Christians and different refugees. You will speak to pastors from Syria, Christians from Iraq and offer help in the refugee camps, together with the Lebanese church. Discover the impact of this crisis for the church in the Middle East and let them know that they are not alone in their struggle. During your time in Lebanon will be exposed to the raw reality of persecution. War, conflict and terrorism has decimated the church and waves of refugees have flooded Lebanon. One out of every four inhabitants in Lebanon today is a refugee. Their need is urgent.

TIM HAMILTON'S STORY

"I'm weeping with relief as I finish. Dance music thumps out; the muskathletes cheer as I carry my bike up the stairs. My heart is filled with joy and the bike is as light as my head.

7 hours 51 minutes, 111.4kms including detours. It's done. And joyful celebration awaits.

As the euphoria passes we remember it's not about the endurance event itself, but all we have seen and the people for whom we ran, rode, walked."
